Lacrosse is considered to be the oldest sport in America. Created by Native Americans , it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years. The game has adapted significantly over thousands of years and the appeal of the game is growing rapidly across the world.
Traditionally popular in the Northeast, especially in New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts , it is now gaining ground in the rest of the country. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth participation in the sport has grown over 138% since 2001 to nearly 300,000. At the high school level, no other sport has grown faster over the last 10 years. The NCAA has more than 500 college club programs, including nearly 200 women’s teams competing at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Association level.
The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Anyone can play lacrosse -- the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse.
An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men's and women's lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball.
In 2028, Lacrosse will be entering the Olympic stage in Los Angeles. While Lacrosse has been in the Olympics in its history, this is monumental as this is the first time we will see women's lacrosse! A historic opportunity for the game
